Here’s a picture of some of the kids participating in the Sandcastle Skule at Vancouver Science World today.
Members of the events team responsible for the Uptown White Rock Sandcastle Competition 2010, Sara Woodward, Jorden Abernethy and Lisa Nolan were invited by Science World to put on a sandcastle skule, as part Science Worlds “fun in the sun” hands on interactive display this week, running until December 30th.
The best part of building a sandsculpture is of course…..
jumping on the sculpture when it’s finished!!!!
Wow! what an amazing experience - we have a 4 day “sandcastle skule” going on at the Vancouver Science World this week. The kids are sooooo much fun to play with! Science World built a special 8×8 sandbox for us, brought in sand, and some of the event organizers of the Uptown White Rock Sandcastle Competition 2010 are putting on a Sandcastle Skule for the kids. If you need to keep the kids busy, bring them down to Science World this week -along with some messy pants because this is a hands on fun event.
Now this is a mysterious team…. keep your eyes out for “movie crew 7″, team number 7 now entered in the White Rock Sandcastle Competition 2010, and welcome to our fun filled shin-dig. We can’t wait to see what you have in store for us! Feel free to hit the special effects department on set, or props….. we fully encourage all wackiness from teams!

It’s not the first place you’d expect to find sandcastles. But a revived, revamped sandcastle event proposed for uptown White Rock next summer is predicted to bring 100,000 people and $1 million to the city, nonetheless. The Uptown Sandcastle Walking Tour is being promoted as an event that will boost tourism, encourage physical activity and benefit business. And organizers – who chose uptown over the typical beach setting after recent reports citing an increase in staph bacteria at public beaches – are optimistic that will earn it the city’s blessing.“We’re hoping that city council sees the value… sees the benefits to all the businesses uptown, because that’s why we’re doing this,” said Lisa Nolan, a White Rock resident who was a driving force behind the sandcastle event held during the 2008 Spirit of the Sea Festival.White Rock was once known for its annual sandcastle competition. The tradition ran for eight years from 1979, attracting 150,000 to the local beach at its peak, until the enormous and rowdy crowds lead to its cancellation. The tour proposed for July 25 to Aug. 4 targets families and seniors, Nolan noted, adding no events will take place after 6 p.m.It is one of two special events recommended for approval in a leisure services report, presented to council this week.An April Hike for Hospice also got a thumbs up in the report.Noting both events have the support of the White Rock Business Improvement Association, the report’s only condition of endorsing them was that neither bring additional costs to the city.Nolan promised the self-guided tour of 20 to 25 sandcastles wouldn’t cost the city a penny, as the sculptures would be built on private property, and a search for sponsors is already underway.“We were very, very clear that we do not want money from the city. We would rather have them build new sidewalks,” she said.Nolan estimates the week-long tour would draw up to 5,000 people to the city per weekday and as many as 40,000 on each of the two weekends. July 25 would be the competition date. The BIA’s Russ Davies described the idea as “something really smart and really big.”“It would put the spotlight on, essentially, sandcastle city, which is White Rock,” he said. But it needs everybody at the table to pull it off, Davies said. He, too, is optimistic the event will be seen as a benefit.Council Monday tabled any decision on the events. It is not expected back on the agenda until the new year
Who: The White Rock Sandcastle Competition 2010 Events Team
What: Sandcastle Skule
Where: Vancouver Science World
When: From December 28-31, 2009 between 11am and 3pm
Why: We were invited to participate in the Vancouver Science World’s Winter Activities and put on a Sandcastle Skule for the kids visiting the Science World, so this is how we will be spending out winter vacation…. teaching kids how to do a sand sculpture.
How: the Vancovuer Science World is building a special sandbox, and our team will be showing the kids how to sculpt sand using regular everyday items, while enjoying our time together laughing and giggling.
This is the type of thing which makes our city a truly amazing place to live. Willingness to explore partnerships between new youth initiated ideas and experienced clubs.
Our first meeting with the ELKS, White Rock Lodge 431 is next week, to explore a partnership for next summers sandcastle competition. The ELKS do alot of amazing community work, and we are hoping they will have the time and volunteers to put on 3 of their famous BBQ’s during the Sandcastle Competition next summer, with the proceeds to support their local community work. It’s incredibly generous of the ELKS to put together a committee and explore a partnership with the competition.
If the ELKS decide that they do have enough volunteers to put on a BBQ, please show your support towards one of our cities oldest service clubs and stop by their BBQ, grab a bite to eat while making new friends at the White Rock Sandcastle Competition, July 25-August 1, 2010 “uptown” White Rock BC
If you happen to be in the Lowermainland between Christmas and New Years, and looking for something to keep the kids amused, come on down to the Vancouver Science World! Our team has been invited to put on a “sandcastle skule” as an interactive event happening inside the Science World. We all LOVE going to the Science World, so when we were asked, we immediately said “YES PLEASE”!!!!
This is also our kick-off for the six month countdown to the White Rock Sandcastle Competition, July 25 to August 1, 2010.
oh my gosh, this is very cool! We will be doing a “sandcastle skule” for four days in December as part of an interactive indoor event. We will post all the details in December. We’re sooooooo excited!
We DEFINITELY want to thank the White Rock Business Improvement Association Board of Directors for supporting this event, especially Russ Davies, Executive Director, for his mentorship.
We did a site evaluation a couple of weekends ago for the 2010 White Rock Sandcastle Competition and took pictures of 50 possible locations, which will be edited down to 25. The sandcastle competition will be spread out over a six block radius and our vision is for a neat self guided walking tour of the sand sculptures after the competition is over. Our event runs from July 25 to August 1, 2010.
Tasha came out with baby ( her 1 year old daughter Peyton) and was a huge help letting us know where problems might exist in the pathways for families with strollers. This was helpful because if we take into consideration that people with wheelchairs, walkers, White Rock Harley’s (scooters) would experience the same challenges at the same places where a stroller would, she helped us to identify a couple of areas where there would be problems, and we were able to make a change right on the spot.
What a nice surprise to have Corrine join us on her only day off. She works 2 jobs while trying to save for college AND was able to make time to come out and help us figure out locations. Her keen eye for detail and thoughtfulness towards what a guest might experience or feel was really helpful.
Jorden and Sara were with us to do the site evaluation. As always, these two students are so helpful and fun to work with. Their input for which locations to choose was spot on and helpful.
One of the funniest things we realized while figuring out what would make an interesting walk for guests, what would make a fun location for teams, was how many neat businesses are in White Rock which we didn’t know about! We found ourselves saying out loud ” I didn’t know this was here” and “when did this start”.
This is exactly what we want guests to say out loud next summer when they come to White Rock to see the competition take place on July 25. The sand sculptures will be preserved in place for one week so anyone can go on the self guided walking tour from July 26 to August 1, 2010.
Thank you to Jorden, Sara, Tasha, and Corrine for coming out to do a site evaluation – you guys are the best.
